The Royal Netherlands Society for War Studies (KVBK) in cooperation with Leiden University invites you for the lecture 'Deterring China: Challenges and Opportunities' on Thursday, 16 March.
The conflict in Ukraine receives much attention, not least in the academic war studies realm. Deterring Putin's Russia is an urgent matter, but it is important not to loose track of the bigger and long term picture. China not only strives for becoming the strongest player in the international arena, but also has the potential of significantly influencing the Russo-Ukrainian conflict by either actively or not supporting Russia.
Deterring China therefore, should receive attention just as much as dealing with Russia. In a way as a follow-up to 22 May 2019, Michael Mazarr will address us for the second time about the challenges and opportunities of deterrence - this time with a focus on China.

Michael J. Mazarr
RAND
Michael J. Mazarr is a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation. Previously he worked at the U.S. National War College, where he was professor and associate dean of academics; as president of the Henry L. Stimson Center; senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies; senior defense aide on Capitol Hill; and as a special assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His primary interests are U.S. defense policy and force structure, disinformation and information manipulation, East Asian security, nuclear weapons and deterrence, and judgment and decisionmaking under uncertainty. Mazarr holds a Ph.D. in public policy from the University of Maryland. (source: RAND)
