When organizing a symposium on the relationships between African security and European policies, we found Leiden University College was already organizing a similar symposium on 22 September. This offered an interesting chance for cooperation with Leiden University's Africa Studies Centre and the NLDA. We are working towards three events, exploring the military, economic and political/diplomatic domains of African-European relationships, starting 22 September.
European security policies have a significant impact on the African continent. The war in Ukraine has deprived African countries of military equipment deliveries and spare parts - not to mention the shortages of grain. China fills in gaps left by former colonialist countries in Africa, although it remains to be seen how much the African countries really gain from this exchange. Moreover, the Russian Wagner Group - now called Afrika Korps - is active in several African countries delivering security, but also promotes Russian interests. Most Europeans are unaware of the implications of European security policies on the African continent. This series of events therefore, provides some insights in how European decisions influence our southern neighbours from the military, economical and political/diplomatic perspective.
